"Smart" opponents...? I have been away from the forum for a while and did not find it worthwile to adjust my mod for the Last patch (no AI improvrements), so I may not be up to date. Nevertheless, until 1.30 at least, "smart" was a word that did not fit the SE4 AIs at all. The modders are doing great jobs to improve the lower level routines of ship design and economics, but for the AI to be "smart", the hardcoded part of the game must be altered.
Do not get me wrong, I find that Aaron already has done some noticable improvements in that part during previous patches, but nevertheless, the AI's strategy and diplomacy are erratic, unfocused...well, rather crappy. Let's be honest, after playing the game twice you will always win except if you give the AIs huge bonuses ("small" advantage already means twice (!) your resources, "medium" means three times, ...).
When people were talking about SE3, I always had the impression that there the AI was truley "smart" in the latest Versions. However, reading the latest Posts at this forum, people also seem to become rather content with the current state of the AI, which I cannot really understand. So, the question is, will the AI ever be a challenge in itself, or is what we have now most of what we will ever see ? And am I the only one who thinks that the current AI is crap... has ample space for improvement ?
Addition: Read this in another threat and am entirely aware of it:
"I think the reason everyone is always asking for more is because typically Aaron actually DOES it! "
