2 weeks later I finally managed to get him called back (figured it wasn't worth trying too hard). Just for general information purposes in case anyone wonders in the future: no, he cannot research anymore.

Now I have to decide if it's worth 50 gems to empower him for the research bonus, if only I had some water gems, I'd have nothing better to do with them anyway since clams are outlawed in this game

Ah well, a walking temple isn't that bad.

[edit] By the way, are there any items I can forge to make him a stealthy walking temple?

Nope. He's pretty useless now. You've got a glorified walking temple.

Roughly three temples actually. So it is still worth it.
