Elementals are unusual in that they change size as they take damage. My guess is it is a bug related to that somehow.

I don't think it's a bug. The elementals have special sequential second shapes, achieved with the #secondshape command (i.e. when they die, they turn into monster # specified by #secondshape <nbr>). Most monsters with a secondshape also have a firstshape (e.g. the Machakan Black Sorcerer has #secondshape x and #firstshape y, where x is Hunter Spider and y is the normal Black Sorcerer)

The way these commands work is that if the first shape is killed, the monster turns to the second form, and if it survives the battle iin its second form, it reverts to the first shape again.

Elementals are different, they have sequential secondshapes (e.g. Earth Elemental starts from 492, which has #secondshape 493, which has #secondshape 494 etc) until the size one elemental has NO secondshape and will finally, permanently die.

So what really happened was that the elemental had 7 HP left, got smacked down and the next form started out with 8 HP. No bug.
