However armor skipping mines would have some use, but would tend to leave intact hollow shells of ships, not worth capturing.
Yes, shields do not affect mines.
But, armor skipping weapons will hit armor
if it is the only thing left on the ship. I know this, cause you can kill armored ships with shard cannons.
I left out shield-damaging mines from my mod, but am considering the addition of shield-disruptor mines (to assist boarding parties)
The null-space mines will gut components first, then destroy the armor if they have no other target.
Each mine will pick a random ship to attack, and do damage. A new random ship is chosen after every warhead blows. Engine-only affects only engines, weapon only affects only weapons. Null space leaves armor for Last.
If you have a fleet of ships hit a pack of null-space mines, the results will be on of:
-Light damage to multiple ships' internals.
-Heavy damage to most ships' internals, plus a few ships with armor damage (or destroyed)
-Most ships' armor damaged or destroyed. A very slight chance of a large ship having internals remaining.
-All ships destroyed.
Tachyon and Ion mines are not intended to destroy ships. They will affect an entire fleet of ships if they enter at the same time. A single ship will waste all of your ion/tachyon mines.
Deploying Ion mines in black hole systems is very effective, even in small Groups. Even in empty space, these can slow down a fleet until they conduct repairs, giving you time to counter attack or ready defenses.
Using Tachyon mines can allow you to wipe out fleets with inexpensive unshielded/unarmored ships.
