Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
No not sarcasm; not at all. It was a straight forward declaration that this game could not have enough flaws to stop me from purchasing it. Depth of play and replay can’t be gained from footage. Apparently you and I do have the same opinion, which is we would buy and play it regardless, now if we can get the bean counters to agree with us.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
You do need some minimum amount of complexity (to get beyond tic-tac-toe and rock-paper-scissors), but simple can make for great depth.
Consider CBmod, for example. As far as the datafiles go, it is quite simple. At the same time it has a lot of strategic depth due to the flexibility and balance (if I do say so myself).
It seems to me that too many people try to add complexity with an iron fist and choke off depth by accident as a side effect.

Sure you can. Just look at chess; compared to most TBS PC games, it is extremely simple. There is no building, no resources, no stats on units, no terrain; just pieces that have certain movement patterns. The rules are very simple and straightforward. There is very little complexity, but it is an extremely deep game.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I have to disagree. Chess is very complex. You need to plan your moves several steps ahead. Movement patters could as well be translated into stats, as can the amount of pieces you have.
Just because a game CAN be simple to amateurs, that doesnt mean it cant be complex to professionals

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
I think that's what we mean by simple, and deep.
The rules are very simple, and can be listed on half of an 8.5"x11" sheet of paper with enough pictures for average joes to understand. The gameplay that comes out of that is quite deep.

Re: OT: perfect tactical combat engine: footage he
Whatever you say, games that are simple which lack complexety end up becoming boring. Just look at Empires At War. Only a year later and you can get it for less than 20 bucks. (Compared to Civ IV or even III by the same time.)
