Did you just try with your modded comps but on normal ships ?
Try one change at a time

... I don't think there's a hardcode issue with the components, just perhaps a problem with the code finding them if you changed the carriers to other than Ship/base... I expect so

Actually, I did. I put them on base ships, and they worked fine. I created a ringworld. ON the sats/fighters/mines nothing
