I will now use this phrase in casual discorse at any time a less esoteric, but similar, phrase would have sufficed. I get the feeling that if I do, though, fewer people will be willing to engage me in casual discourse... ah, well, the dream was sweet.

Why? Using phrases arcane to the behearer only makes you more interesting.
I've met a lot of intelligent people through this - they all had a Phd in psychology.
The best technique though, is to sit next to someone in a night train and start muttering them to yourself, with occassional outbursts.

Hmmm... I was out of town for the holiday on this side of the pond, so I didn't see your reply.

I think my wife may have met you (and quickly moved to another car) on one of her visits to Europe, assuming that's where you live.
