Why was I permanently banished?

I had taken almost all of the enemies provinces, so I dont
see how he could have taken away all my dominion. I never built temples or anything but that shouldn't matter. My god was still alive also.

As mentioned earlier... most likely you never built any temples. The only other possible cause was you setup the game with a victory condition such as victory points... and you lost those provinces.
