A 'squad' is exactly the same as a 'section'. Section is mostly used by British commonwealth nations; squad is used by the US.
You are right that sections/squads are normally about 8 to 12 men.
This game was designed and is best played at the battalion level, which is normally 3 to 6 companies (but you can play with larger forces). You can buy whole companies to quickly make a battalion.
If you don't want to build a battalion you can just choose the nation and number of purchase points and click that you want the computer to purchase your forces (under the 'Player 1' button) Then the computer will build a battalion for you.
