I assume you mean playing as the allies but what side actually?, you dont say,so you need to be more specific.

Anyway,, the side of map is historicaly set for the place,date and force selected for that period.

Also, IIRC correctly,you can swap sides in a single battle, but as i've never bother with it,you'll have to investigate that option

After a bit of testing, it does seem to be based on the geographic location of the countries. Kind of a shame ... means I'm always on the right against China.
