The 1st Marine Division, many of whom are grizzled veterans of Guadalcanal, are now called upon to lead the invasion of Peleliu. The capture of this island is intended to secure General MacArthur's flank in his attack on the Phillipine Islands. What is anticipated to be a 3 day fight will go on for 8 weeks. The 1st Batallion, led by "Chesty Puller", has hit the beach and is moving quickly toward the airfield. Japanese tanks are roaring into the junction of two American battalions and are striking the suprised Marines.*

General Ushijima, Japanese Commander on Okinawa has played a superb defensive game against the invading Americans. Enthused by his success and in the heat of the moment, he has decided to go on the offensive. He will use artillery barrages, amphibious assaults and frontal attacks to break the American will. In a swift reversal of strategy, he has ordered an attack.*
