Here is a WIP update to that grappler fighter. It's not textured yet but the model is mostly complete.

Those are all lighting effects. Look at the cockpit part. You can see big swatches of plain jane grey.

I don't think the Romarian Fighter (the WIP grappler that kev is doing) has any lighting effects. its just has a basic lighting so that you can actually SEE the model when rendered, when no additional spotlights or other lighting effects inserted.
If the comment is on my mechs, I think we used multiple spotlights to give it some "decency" and not just the plain lighting that rhino does.
I just use flamingo to give it shinyness.
