Re: US OOB 12 corrections/suggestions (v.6)

The jet is not the problem - it is the huge bang when the HEAT round goes off. While part of the explosive force is directed, the rest is not. The secondary effect is considerable.
German tests vs...

Re: US OOB 12 corrections/suggestions (v.6)

Problem with sandbags is that it works something like ERA - i.e. it protects against the first hit, but is blown apart and away, leaving the tank with only the main armour to deal with the next...

Re: Sd.Kfz. 252 LGM

According to Spielbergers book on the StuG, it was part of the requirement for the SdKfz 252 that it carried one MG that could be mounted on an AA-mount.

That could be the origin for the...

Re: US OOB 12 corrections/suggestions (v.6)

IIRC the US tank formations in Tunesia were temporarily issued vehicles from Lend-Lease stocks in North Africa after the Sidi-bou-Zid/Kasserine debacle in February 1943. If memory serves me right,...

Re: sabot rounds on 7TP

IIRC "sabot" is sometimes used to represent rounds with very limited performance like the AP used in the French 37mm tank gun. Something about the performance of normal AP dropping off in a liniear...

Re: Off-map artillery

What are we comparing here?

In some cases, you refer to particular charges or particular shells, but what would be the type of shell/charge to use for comparison purposes?

Is it max. range...

Re: German OOB 16: minor corrections

:)

Everybody, his uncle and his sons dog have figures for these guns and you can quote from the now until the end of history without really solving the issue. The solution to the problem lies,...

Re: new move class for unreliable tanks

How would you quantify "mechanical problems"?

Mechanical problems came in all shapes and sizes and appeared under different types of circumstances. Spark plug fouling, for example, happened when...

Re: German OOB 16: missing 8,8cm Pak 43/41

According to Hahn: "Waffen und Geheimwaffen...", a pre-production series of the PaK 43 were delivered in november 1943 (6 guns) but the first guns from series production were issued to the troops in...

Re: German OOB 16 Corrections/Suggestions

Chamberlain & Doyle (Encyclopedia.....) says the same thing as does Spielberger in his book on Czech armour.

Re: German OOB 16 Corrections/Suggestions

I dont recall how Panzer IVs are labelled in the game, but the F2 version only existed for a few months as well:

March 21st 1942:
- Ausf. F1 = Ausf. F with KwK 37 7,5cm L/24
- Ausf. F2 = Ausf....

Re: "Welded on spare tracks" armour in-game

As with most questions about armour and the protection it gives, the issue is complex.

1. As you point out, the metal used for tracks does not equal armour plate. Add to that, the fact that the...

Re: Panzerjäger, SdKfz 8 FlaK 18, etc. ...

There was probably 10 vehicles made and while it is true that it was only used by one company, it seems that the company operated this vehicle from 1939 and well into the summer of 1942, possibly all...

Oh, I wouldn't suggest such a thing. I was thinking of one generic Borgward representing the big boys and one generic Goliatch representing the small stuff = two slots.

As for them being...

Re: OOB 16 error report

Seeing as there were only a handful of complete hulls and only prototype turrets completed I don't think saying "the vehicle is fitted" is accurate but I'll give you that the hull armour is most...

Re: StuG IIIg BMG

While not quite the same as in the picture, the Panzer IV/70 A at the Musee de Blindes in Saumur, France, is is a classic example of cracked armour.

Re: StuG IIIg BMG

Hard armour plate can be quite brittle and will crack and shatter like this when hit. There is plenty of pictures of German AFVs from WWII where the armour has cracked and split like the gun mantlet...

Re: PaK 97/38

If the gun was issued in spring/early summer 1942, the early HEAT round - the one without a prefix - was probably no longer in production. IIRC this was the round introduced in the summer of 1940 and...

It turns out that it is likely that the author of the Polish book used exactly the same source as I did - Hahns "Waffen und Geheimwaffen....". He just read the table on page 115 wrong :)

As he...

Re: PaK 97/38

PzGr 40 usually means a subcaliber HVAP-type round, which sounds rather odd for this weapon - nor have I ever read anything about subcaliber ammunition being used with this gun.
There was a PzGr 40...

Re: M10, Wolverine, Achilles Self-Propelled Guns

lmp, Cross

When arguments fail, one hears only mockery and silence :)

I might want to remind Cross, that he initially wrote, as a argument for changing the names of the M10 in the British OOB:...

Re: M10, Wolverine, Achilles Self-Propelled Guns

It may be news to you, but museums gets lots of stuff wrong - often they just use the information available to you and me, primarily books, and they will, like any one else who has not had the time...
